"Close to Home, But Not All the Way There Came here for the first time craving proper Malaysian home food.. Ordered char kuey teow, roti canai, white rice and chicken peratal.. Let’s be real the chicken peratal wasn’t what we expected.. It didn’t taste like Malaysian style at all.. Felt more like Sri Lankan or Fiji style curry and I don’t think Malaysian spices (like Baba’s) were used here.. Now the good stuff Roti canai was excellent big, fluffy and properly done.. And the char kuey teow? Spot on.. That one tasted exactly like Malaysian style and deserves full credit.. Came back the next day and ordered nasi goreng kampung… and that’s where the disappointment hit.. No anchovies at all.. Instead, it came with seafood, broccoli, cauliflower and worst of all bean sprouts.. Let’s be clear: Malaysian fried rice does NOT use bean sprouts.. Not nasi goreng, not nasi goreng kampung, not nasi goreng ayam.. That alone kills the authentic Malaysian vibe.. Soggy broccoli and bean sprouts in fried rice is just not it.. That said, the uncle is super friendly, service is fast and the shop is neat and clean.. There’s definitely potential here just needs to stay true to actual Malaysian flavours instead of remixing the classics.. "Logan was here Malaysian food hits hardest when it stays Malaysian""
"Food was great and very filling. I found myself full way before I could finish my portion. Just that there was overpowering taste of ginger in the beef rendang!"
"Uncle Sugu's dishes are indeed a truly Malaysian experience. The prata, nasi goreng and mee goreng were delicious. This is definitely a must to go if you are missing food from back home. Its halal!"
"Love the Roti Canai and curry combo here! I’ve been coming to this place since 2017, and I’d definitely recommend getting the Roti Canai combo. Adding to my review as I’m now a regular. The Char Kway Teow and Mamak Mee are my new favourites! The Char Mee was great too. The owner always adjusts the spice level based on your preference, which I really appreciate. Love this place, nothing has changed! If you want to try authentic Malaysian food, make sure to keep this spot on your list."
"LOVE the food here... Been coming here for over 15years and Sugu is the real deal (and he's from Malaysia) We always get the lamb curry with roti & the char kuey teow and the dishes are generous in the amount of food - he doesn't use any MSG (Mono sodium glutamate which I'm allergic too) whereas a lot of Malaysian restaurants I've tried use MSG which I react to Having been to Malaysia a few times, Sugus restaurant in this foodcourt is like being back there on holiday. I now live 1.25hours away from this place but still drive here every few months and buy up extra dishes to take back home! Soooo worth it after not being able to find any better Malaysian place in Auckland than Sugu's (and we've tried many)!!"
"The authentic Malaysian cuisine at this establishment is truly exceptional. In my opinion, this is the finest Roti Canai I have ever tasted in New Zealand. The Roti is freshly prepared at the front of the shop, allowing patrons to witness the cooking process. The "Char Kway Teow" dish is also prepared in a traditional Malaysian style. Owner is super friendly :)"
"This resturaunt is located in a little food hall/court. Which has a communal seating area. Just heads up that the parking lot cna get quite chaotic during mealtimes, and you might not get a parking spot easily. But among the other food stalls here, I really needed to have a laksa. It didn't disappoint. Was really hearty and filling and exactly what my tastebuds remember. The roti canai is deceptively larger than expected. Which I struggled to eat after having a bowl of laksa. But the flavours are on point, and I'm very happy."
"My family and I really enjoyed our meal here. The food (which is also halal) tasted great and the portions were big too. Uncle Sugu was very welcoming and even came by our table to have a little chat which felt like a quick Mamak lepak session."
